Parasomnias

  • Parasomnias are activities or behaviors that occur during sleep or upon waking up. Patients may or may not remember these events upon awakening.
  • Treating Parasomnias are important to prevent disruption of sleep, poor daytime functioning and potential danger to the patient as well as to bed partners.
  • Examples for Parasomnias are,
    • Sleep walking.
    • Sleep terrors.
    • Sleep related eating disorder.
    • Confusional arousals.
    • Nightmare disorder.
  • Diagnostic work-up includes detailed history from the bed partner or family member followed by neurophysiological evaluation.
