Sleep related laryngospasms

  • In people with this disorder, the wall of muscle surrounding the throat goes into spasm during sleep.
  • This will lead to a turbulence in the airflow in the throat while breathing and create a harsh “brassy” sound known as “stridor”.
  • The interruption to the airflow through the throat into the lungs will cause the person to suddenly wake up from sleep, after which the stridor resolves and the person will resume normal breathing.
  • These episodes are associated with panic and fear as the sensation may be similar to being strangled!
  • This condition may be easily confused with Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
